Japan was hit by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake, March 12, 2011 Friday at 2:46 p.m. local time. Minutes later, the earthquake unleashed a 33-foot (ten-meter) tsunami along the northeastern coast of Japan near Sendai. Reports said that more than 1,000 people were feared dead and hundreds were missing.
